A Deeper Dive
Caroline travelled with us to the show in 2026. We asked her to share her experience.
This was my first visit to ‘Festival Internacional de Patchwork’ and I was really delighted at how interesting the layout was compared to UK shows. I have attended many British shows and often steward at the main Festival of Quilts in Birmingham but attending a show in Spain was very refreshing. I had seen highlights of an old show on YouTube and was intrigued to see the show on the promenade under tents. The display of quilts were also in various buildings around the town which gave you a little walk and some fresh air before going into the next venue. The atmosphere the venues created where the quilts were being shown added to the enjoyment.
My three show highlights would be:
- New suppliers and new ideas. In the UK you tend to see the same suppliers at different locations but selling mostly the same stuff.
- The show started at 10am for quilt viewing and 11am for commercial tents which made for a leisurely morning enjoying breakfast. However, the best part was the show stayed open until 8pm so I went back to the hotel mid-afternoon for a siesta and then popped back over to the commercial tents after 6pm as it was usually much quieter and I could really look at everything.
- It’s always nice to see quilts that other people and groups have made in the UK but we all do tend to follow the same trends and themes. Seeing work from another country was fascinating and very thought provoking as you could see what was important to them in their lives and view new techniques.
Top Tips for 2027
- Leave some luggage allowance free and bring a spare bag for purchases.
- Don’t purchase straight away, get the suppliers name and web address and look them up online first and think about it. You might even find you can order it and get it shipped home for the same price.
- Remember that any kits you buy will probably have instructions written in Spanish. Don’t be afraid to ask what is included in the kit before you buy it. And if you ask the price and don’t understand the answer, just ask them to write the number down for you.
- Wear tried and tested shoes and bring more than one pair as changing shoes gives your feet a better rest.
- When you want a break, don’t just sit down in the nearest cafe next to a tent, cross the road and walk two minutes into the village. The coffee and food are so much better, and cheaper, and the peace and quiet is refreshing.
