Maastricht's origins are as a Roman settlement; its geographical location at a shallow part of the River Meuse provided an ideal location at which to construct a bridge- this development providing a pivotal point in the city's history. From 1600 to 1830 the city's economy was entirely aimed at the presence of the garrison within its walls - traces of the age-long military presence linger on in stories, military maps, rituals and expressions.
Maastricht is the oldest industrial town of The Netherlands with the building of the canal improving the infrastructure of the city. Visiting the city today offers the opportunity to see many museums, churches, historical buildings, hidden alleys and spacious squares. Religious tourists have travelled to Maastricht for centuries to see the Basilicas of Our Lady and St. Servatius. For those who dare, there are even tours held in the underground caverns and mines.
For those seeking excellent shopping, there are plenty of opportunities to find art and design shops as well as fashion boutiques and markets. Maastricht is also home to several art galleries where you can find paintings, sculptures, and other contemporary art.
