Christmas Markets in Alsace 2020
Festive Magic on an escorted tour to Colmar and the pretty towns of Alsace
Experience the fairy tale magic and charm of advent in the Alsace, famous for its pretty, timber-framed buildings and Medieval towns.
On this wonderful festive tour you will visit Christmas markets in Colmar; Ribeauville, a charming town nestled between vineyards and mountains that was voted number two in the European Best Destinations list of Christmas markets; Riquewihr, considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France, and the historic German city of Freiburg.
You will be staying in the heart of Colmar to give you time to make the most of the town's six Christmas markets, all offering a charming range of locally-crafted ornaments and delicious culinary treats, from cured meats and oysters, to gingerbread and Alsatian specialities.
A tour highlight will be a specially arranged visit to a local Alsatian wine maker for a guided tour of their cellars, followed by a wine tasting - and of course there will be opportunity to buy some special wines to enjoy back home.
We have also arranged a welcome dinner at Caveau Sait-Pierre, a renowned Alsatian restaurant in a romantic setting in Colmar's 'Little Venice'.

Alsace lies on the far eastern side of France, in the valley of the forested Vosges Mountains along the Rhine River. This fertile area has been a centre of wine production for centuries, producing wines of amazing character and aromatics. On the third day of your tour you will travel to Zellenberg, a small, hillside village nestled in the middle of vineyards, for a private guided tour of Beckers', a family run company that has been making some of the best Alsatian wines since 1610.
Using organically farmed grapes from the local - and internationally renowned - Jean Philippe and Jean Francois estates, Beckers' produce a range of varieties (including the four noble varieties: Riesling, Gewurztrminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat) and Grand Crus, as well as luxurious sweet Vendanges Tardives and SGNs. Your tour will end with a tasting in which you will sample three wines and some Kougelhopf, a traditional Alsatian cake. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a few bottles to enjoy at home over the festive period.
Nestled amidst vineyards and filled with colourful, half-timbered merchants' houses, Colmar is the archetypal Alsatian town. You will have time to wander the pretty, cobbled streets of the old town, discovering architectural highlights such as the 16th century Pfister house with its ornate oriel window, the 17th century House of Heads, (so called because it is decorated with 111 carved stone masks), and the distinctive white-fronted houses that line the River Lauch. Local market gardeners, fishmongers and tanners used to pass along this stretch of river, showing off their produce in small, flat-bottomed boats. The tradespeople have now disappeared, but the boats remain offering visitors the chance to see Colmar from the river and giving the town a rather Venetian feel.
Food and wine are important here too. As the capital of the Alsace wine region, Colmar boasts a wealth of independent vintners.
You will be staying at the 3* The Colmar Hotel in the city centre
