This green oasis is located behind the academy building of Leiden University and houses a large collection of plants native to South-east and East Asia, Southern Europe and South Africa. Described as a green treasure hidden in the historical centre of Leiden, Hortus Botanicus was founded in 1590 by the University of Leiden and is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands - and one of the oldest in the world. In 1594, Carolus Clusius turned the site into a medicinal herb garden and also introduced the tulip and many other plants like tobacco and the potato to the Hortus. These flowers and plants became known throughout Western Europe.
The centre is home to 10,000 botanical species and, as well as playing an important role in the cultivation and preservation of endangered species, Hortus botanicus Leiden has always been a garden where students come to study plants. Scientists of the Hortus work with the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis to write research on plant species.
The Hortus also has a monumental Orangery from 1744 and extensive tropical greenhouses, as well as many old trees, a beautiful Fern Garden, Rosarium, Japanese Garden, Herb Garden, Nut Field and System Garden. Many famous international scientists such as Clusius, Boerhaave, Linnaeus and Einstein were connected to the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden.
Thanks to an incredibly innovative and intricate system of keeping the ever-rising seawater from flooding the land, Holland is protected against the effects of significant parts being approximately seven metres below sea level. Even during spring tide, the Dutch are safely guarded from being washed away… The most important aspect of UNESCO World Heritage, Kinderdijk, is the 19 authentic, 18th century water-pumping windmills which are globally considered to be a Dutch icon. This is a typical Dutch, world-class landscape with delightful views, overwhelming cloud formations and stunning nature.
Relax as you enjoy the peace and quiet of the endless bulb fields around Keukenhof in an electrically-propelled whisper boat. These boats travel through the beautiful Dutch flower bulb landscape in virtual silence. The boat trip takes 45 minutes. Spectacular photos are guaranteed! Unfortunately, wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the boats.
A hofje is a Dutch word for a courtyard with almshouses around it. They have existed since the Middle Ages. A hofje provided housing for elderly people (mostly women). They were privately funded, and served as a form of social security. In the Netherlands there are still a number of hofjes in use.
