Doddington Hall is a privately-owned, late Elizabethan mansion with stunning gardens, located just outside Lincoln. Designed by Robert Smythson, one of England’s foremost Elizabethan architects, it was completed in 1600 and has been a family home ever since.
Over 400 years of unbroken occupation has resulted in fascinating collections of furniture, weaponry, paintings, ceramics, textiles, household objects and porcelain, as well as a wealth of amusing stories, and a visit here offers both a unique insight into family life through the ages and the challenges of looking after a large estate in the 21st century.
The gardens at Doddington are just as spectacular as the Hall itself, having been nurtured and developed to their fullest potential by successive generations. Remaining faithful to the original Elizabethan layout, mellow walls provide the framework for the formal East Front and West Gardens, while the lovingly restored Wild Gardens which lie beyond provide a wonderful contrast in style.
Our tour includes a guided tour of the Hall and garden and a delicious, home-made lunch in the Coach House
Redford Flowers grow a million speciality irises between June and October each year using the deep water hydroponic method. They are the only producers in the world currently using this technique and our visit here includes a fascinating talk and tour of the facility in which you will discover how it leads to a much-improved vase life and witness the raised, automated lines on which the flowers are grown, in action. We will also have the chance to see their crop of premium Oriental lilies in flower and hear how they manage to produce eight million tulips every year.
Founded in 1949, Smith and Munson specialises in growing premium quality tulips and lilies using the latest techniques. Everything is produced inside modern glasshouses, allowing them to harvest every day of the year. Jo Munson, who together with her husband Steve make up the fourth generation of the business, will give us a tour of the farm and treat us to a demonstration using some of their freshly cut flowers.
J.A. Collison & Sons produce in excess of 32 million stems of cut flowers each year, making them one of the largest cut flower growers in the country. They grow seasonal flowers (mainly tulips, stocks, Japanese asters and lilies), but their crop rotation system means that they are able to pick all year round.
Our visit here includes a tour of the extraordinary robotic technology that helps them to cut, pack and dispatch the vast majority of their crop on site.
