An Introduction to the Dutch Flower Industry Tour
This three-day escorted tour is sure to inspire you as you travel to the heart of the international flower trade. See first hand the hub of the largest of the Dutch flower and plant auctions at Flora Holland, enjoy visiting Keukenhof to see the annual display of some seven million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths (the theme for 2020 is World of Colours), delight in meeting Dutch floral designer Astrid Van den Berg at her studio for a series of floral demonstrations and stock up on the the latest floral accessories at wholesaler Alflora. We have also arranged special visits to the world renowned orchid specialist, Anco Pure Vanda, as well as rose grower Meijer Roses, home of the famous Avalanche Rose.
Keukenhof’s annual spring festival is one of the world’s most spectacular floral events. Seven million flowering bulbs turn the garden into a heady celebration of tulips, anemones, daffodils, freesias and hyacinths - themed for 2020 around the idea of 'World of Colours'. There is also a spectacular sculpture garden where visitors will find extraordinary displays created by the world’s leading floriculturists, as well as exhibition zones such as the Beatrix Pavilion with its stunning collection of orchids and the Orange Nassau Pavilion where florists give daily demonstrations.
Auctions are a key part of the floriculture business and with 20 million flowers moving through its halls every day, FloraHolland is the largest in the world. We will visit this famous auction and experience the buzz and excitement of the international flower trade first hand.
Florist Astrid van den Berg has been doing demonstrations with ECT Travel since November 2004. "I love teaching," she says, "I’m very enthusiastic about flowers and all the things you can do with them and I really enjoy passing this passion on. The ECT groups are always special – English people make the best audience because they are so friendly and enthusiastic."
Astrid will give a series of floral demonstrations during your two-hour visit to her studio. You will also enjoy a light lunch on site.
The Netherlands is famous for its tulips, but this region is also home to family run rose breeding company Meijer Roses. Established in 1970, it specialises in the production of the award-winning Avalanche rose. With its long stem and large, blowsy flower head, this rose has become the UK's most sought after wedding flower and is the bloom of choice for royalty and celebrities.
Anco Pure Vanda has been producing the beautiful Vanda orchid, known for its unique air roots, for many years and is now the global market leader. We have arranged for you to enjoy a fascinating private tour of this specialist grower.
Floral wholesaler Alflora in Aalsmeer is the place to discover the latest trends in floral artistry. You will have the opportunity to buy a wide range of trend-setting floristry products, many of which are so new they haven’t yet reached the UK market.
