Brussels is not only the of city the EU, it is also the city of artists Pieter Brueghel and René Magritte, the inventor of art nouveau architecture Victor Horta and Tintin’s creator Hergé. These cultural links can be explored in the Belgian Capital’s many museums and galleries, including the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, the Comic Arts Museum and the Music Museum, a fascinating place in its own right housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building.
Brussels also has plenty to tempt shoppers. The big names in Belgian chocolate – Leonidas, Godiva and Neuhaus – all have several branches here and other foodie treats can be found close to the Grand Palace in Rue du Marché aux Poulets and Rue Sainte Catherine. Market lovers will enjoy the lively Place de Jeu de Balle flea market, which has been trading in the city since 1919, while anyone interested in artisan products of all kinds should head for the cobweb of squares and narrow streets that make up Ixelles. This area is also filled with bars, cafes and restaurants from where you can watch the bustle of Brussels go by.
The city is also famous for its delicious chocolate. We have arranged for you to enjoy an exclusive, hour-long chocolate tasting with a Master Chocolatier at the famous chocolate museum Choco Story. You will taste several different chocolates and some pralines and then have the chance to stock up at the museum's own chocolate shop.
It would be hard to imagine a more picturesque city than Bruges. Boasting cobbled streets lined with perfectly preserved medieval buildings, romantic canals and more horse drawn carts than cars, it is a UNESCO world heritage city made to be discovered on foot.
Wrap up well, put on some comfortable shoes and begin your walking tour at the 13th century Belfry (or Belfort) in Markt Square. Probably the most famous site in the city, this 83m tall tower was built as a treasury, municipal archive store and observation post. If you have the energy to climb the 366 steps to the top, you will be rewarded with the most magnificent views out across the old spires and red-tiled rooftops of Bruges and on towards Zeebrugge's very 21st century wind turbines and cranes.
Burg Square, which is linked to Markt Square by the short, shop-lined street of Breidelstraat, is the historic heart of the city. Here you will find the magnificent 14th century Gothic Stadhuis (town hall) from where Bruges was governed for 600 years, the equally impressive Old Civil Registry and the beautifully ornate, gilded façade of the Basilica of the Holy Blood. This unusual double church (there's a lower, Romanesque church and a neo-Gothic upper one) contains a venerated relic of the Holy Blood.
A narrow alleyway, Blinde Ezelstraat, next to the Stadhuis takes you to the tree-lined Groenerei (the ‘Green Canal’), the city’s prettiest canal. Often called the ‘Venice of the North', Bruges’ canals criss-cross the city and just wandering along their banks and over the many romantic bridges is a lovely way to pass an hour or two.
St. Bonifacius Bridge, which lies just behind the 13th-century Onze Lieve Vrouwe (Church of Our Lady), home to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child sculpture, is the quintessential fairy tale bridge, while Augustijnenbrug and Vlamingbrug are believed to be the oldest surviving bridges in the city.
Look out for the low-slung benches carved into the stone which were built as platforms for merchants to display their wares. The Minnewater Bridge over the Lake of Love in the southern part of the city, is reputed to grant eternal love to any couple who kiss as they cross it.
The 15th and 16th century group of artists known as the Flemish Primitives were centred in Bruges and the Groeninge Museum now houses the finest collection of these paintings in the world. Masterpieces on show include work by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes and Gerard David.
You will be staying at the fabulous 4* Crowne Plaza Hotel Le Palace, a luxurious 4-star hotel set in a prime location in the centre of Brussels within easy reach of main tourist attractions and historic sites.
