Horticultural Student Tour Gardens in Belgium, Laeken
The Royal Greenhouses at Laeken cover six acres of neo-classical rotundas, domes and galleries.
For the last century, once every year, by the grace of the King, these magnificent greenhouses are open to the public.
There are many gardens of interest in Belgium and we can create a tour that offers both variety, from gardens of grandeur to the opening times for 2016 have not been confirmed but they will be in the months of April - May.
Twenty full time gardeners tend the giant palms, ferns, fruit-bearing trees, grottoes, glades and grassy vistas. Some of these plants date back to King Leopold II who commissioned the architect Alphonse Balat to design the greenhouses in 1874. With decorative motifs inspired by plants and flowers used in these spectacular iron and glass dome structures, they represent the beginnings of the Art Nouveau movement.
The floral bloom is spectacular and is at its peak over the three weeks the greenhouses are open. The setting cannot fail to impress with its elegance and grandeur.
The van Buuren Museum is a jewel of greenery in the centre of Brussels. A magnificent Art Deco house designed in the style typical of the Amsterdam School, with a spectacular Art Deco interior, and work by Flemish and Italian Masters. A special part of this museum are the gardens which are arranged in to three parts:
‘The Picturesque Garden’, a masterful Art Deco design by Jules Buyssens (1924), it captivates the essence of the ‘Roaring Twenties’;
and two created by celebrated landscape designer René Pechère :’The Labyrinth’ and ‘Garden of the Heart’, a captivating heart-designed planting.
