Dubrovnik Croatia City Break
Dubrovnik is the jewel of Croatia. The walled city juts out into the clear waters of the Adriatic. When approaching Dubrovnik’s old harbour, with its rows of boats lined up neatly, and the fortified ramparts rising out of the ocean, it provides an entrancing spectacle. A long stretch of beach just outside the walls of the city gives you ample opportunity to rest on the sands or take a dip.
The city, when seen from the hills nearby, is a sea of orange rooftops interrupted with the odd spire or fortification.
Dubrovnik has plenty of hidden corners to discover. To get a feel for its dimensions you could take a walk on the high city walls that offer views out to sea, or you could amble through the maze of narrow side streets that will open up occasionally into squares with entertainment and sitting areas.
Walking down the central thoroughfare of Stradun, the ancient city will draw you in. You can stop for a drink of water at the unusually large Onofrio’s fountain and watch the world go by.
There are plenty of very old buildings to investigate, including the oldest arboretum in the world which dates back to before 1492 and the third oldest pharmacy in the world which you will find in a monastry.
Although often compared to Venice, Dubrovnik is a very unique destination. It is crammed with wonders for the senses and you can easily reach the best of the city on foot.
George Bernard Shaw visited the city in the 1920s and said, “if you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik” - a quote which has stood the test of time.
