Amiens City Break Tour
Amiens is a fascinating location, as rich in history as it is in sights to see. To experience Amiens you should visit the district of Saint-Leu rich in art galleries and antique shops, found among the narrow, colourful houses.
The Notre-Dame d’Amiens Cathedral, built between 1220 and 1288, is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals ever built and is a dominant feature of the city.
Tranquil, picturesque waterways are in abundance and one unique aspect of Amiens is the floating market gardens. These intriguing little islands populate the interlinking canals and traditionally are accessed using flat-bottomed boats called ‘cones.’
Close to the city centre is a zoo with a great array of different species including elephants, penguins and sealions. A worthwhile visit is one to the landscaped gardens at Parc Saint-Pierre, which shows off the water and plant life so typical of the region to great effect.
Famed author Jules Verne lived in Amiens and became an important political figure in the area during his life. It is possible to visit his house which has become a popular attraction.
History has immersed Amiens in many wars through time and the underground tunnels and living areas can be seen that were used in more than one war as a base of operations for different armies.
