The impressive, illuminated facades of the buildings in Münsterplatz become the festive backdrop for Bonn's Christmas market and, from 1st December, the beautiful old town hall is transformed into an enormous Advent calendar, with one more window being lit up each day.  The 170 wooden chalets which make up the market offer all kinds of  decorative crafts, local delicacies, mulled wine and chestnuts and, once the shopping is done, you can complete your Bonn Christmas Market experience with a traditional skate around the ice rink at Friedensplatz.

There is plenty to see in Bonn besides the market, including several museums, galleries and an impressive Cathedral.  Alternatively, for a small supplement, you can add on a visit to Ahrweiler Christmas market on Saturday afternoon, or Valkenburg Christmas Market on Sunday morning. (Both options require a minimum of 10 people.)

Best known as the home of composer Ludwig van Beethoven, Bonn is a culturally rich city built on the banks of the River Rhine. Highlights include the Bonn Art Museum, Axel Schultes' architectural masterpiece with its extensive collection of German post-war art, August Macke House, Bonner Münster (Bonn Cathedral) and, of course, Beethoven's birthplace.

The large pedestrian precinct in the attractive historic centre offers plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can just sit and watch the city go by.

Located on the banks of the Ahr River, Ahrweiler is an idyllic German town filled with beautifully preserved half-timbered houses surrounded by medieval town walls. A traditional, and very festive, Christmas Market is held on weekends throughout Advent.

Valkenburg’s Christmas Market, held in the municipal cave, is said to be the biggest, oldest and most visited underground Christmas market in Europe. Up to 50 shops set up their stalls in the richly decorated galleries and there are plenty of cosy restaurants and cafes where tired shoppers can treat themselves to a delicious mug of hot chocolate.
