Following on from WAFA in Jaipur and visiting Rathambore, Agra and Delhi, why not extend your experience of  India and visit the wonders of  the North?

North India

This programme follows the same route as our Floral and Cultural Adventure with Michael Bowyer and Tom Hodge, taking you high up to Shimla hill station at the foothills of the Himalayas. Arrive in Shimla from Solan Rail Station on board the famous Toy Train, and spend two nights at an iconic hotel with spectacular views.  You will also travel to Chandigarh, the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, to  enjoy city sites, including parks and gardens. Your final destination is Amritsar, arriving by Intercity Express in time to see the evening border closing at an army outpost on the Indo-Pakistani border. You will also enjoy two visits to the spectacular Golden Temple, spiritual home of the Sikh faith; once in the morning  to observe the feeding of the 5,000, and again in the evening to see the temple magically lit up and witness the sacred Palki Sahib ceremony.

Toy train

From Delhi we fly to Chandigarh and take the Himalayan Toy Train to Shimla, the summer capital of the British. After a night at the Oberoi Cecil Heritage hotel, famous during the British Raj for its fabulous ballroom dances and fashionable clientele, you will take a tour of the city. Sites include the Vice Regal Lodge and its begonia-filled botanical garden, a Hindu temple containing shrines to many Hindu gods and Scandal Point. According to legend, this is where, in 1892, Bhupinder Singh, the then Maharaja of Patalia, eloped with the viceroy’s daughter.

We then drive on to the city of Chandigarh, stopping en route at the magnificent Rock Gardens and Zakir Rose Garden.  Designed by the Swiss modernist architect Le Corbusier after it was chosen as the new capital of the Punjab following Partition, Chandigarh is a fascinating example of urban planning. You will see key sites such as the Secretariat and Legislative Assembly, the High Court, State Library and University Drive. You will spend one night at the 5* Taj Chandigarh

Our programme ends with two nights in Amritsar, home to the Golden Temple, the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion. Travelling from Chandigarh by Intercity Express, you will visit this white marble temple with its golden dome twice; once in the morning to see the community kitchen (langar) where volunteers feed 30,000 people each day, and again in the evening to witness the Palki Sahib Ceremony in a palanquin (a covered litter) garlanded with flowers.

Other sites in Amritsar include the beautiful Ram Bagh Garden and the historic Jallianwala Bagh commemorating the hundreds of Indians killed or wounded by the British in this notorious massacre.

Shimla - you will spend two nights at the Heritage hotel Oberoi Cecil, famous for its fabulous dances and fashionable clientele during the days of the Raj. The comfortable guest rooms are decorated in an authentic colonial style, while the restaurant is housed in what was once the chicest ballroom in Shimla. There is also a spa, swimming pool and fitness centre.
