What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files sent from a website to a client computer. They contain small pieces of information (e.g. the site name and a unique user ID). When a user returns to a website the information is sent to the website server to help the smooth functioning of the website.
Cookies are not software and cannot carry viruses.
Cookies stored on a computer can be deleted or users can stop cookies being downloaded, but this may result in decreased website functionality. E.g. if cookies are disabled in a shopping cart application the purchase and user preferences will not be stored and will have to be entered with every visit to the website.
Cookies can also be present in widget, banner ads and external elements being loaded on to a web page.
